Composition and intentional choices

£100.00

One day workshop, 10am-4pm. All levels welcome. It’s a guided workshop and intended to help you think more about the artwork you are making, and why.

This workshop will be in a few parts:

  • I explain fundamental ideas around composition with diagrams and examples. How to recognise good composition, or the potential to tweak an image to create good composition. How to recognise problems in your compositions and how to tweak images to make them work better, with examples

  • We talk through thought processes to make an image your own. How to approach your subject and making intentional choices for your artwork to reflect your own impressions and memories of a place.

  • Working with your own photos as a starting point you will be able to look at which have the strongest compositions to start with by recognising compositional structures you’ve seen in the examples, or potential problems.. You’ll learn to recognise how you might crop and tweak an image to improve the composition, clarify your intent, and recognise how your eye moves through the picture plane and how to guide it.

  • You’ll be sketching through ideas, working up an image and be guided in the process. We’ll keep things simple with monotone images and I’ll provide charcoal, erasers and paper for you to work with.

  • Review - what worked, what didn’t, how might you approach it next time

Number of people: minimum 6, maximum 10. Age 18+

3 First Cross Road, Twickenham TW2 5QA

Next workshop Saturday 24th October. Message me if you want to be notified of new dates or to be added to a waitlist for a fully booked course, or if you want to create a private workshop booking with friends or colleagues here

FAQs:

Where is the course held?: 3 First Cross Road, next to Twickenham Green. Some of you might have visited for open studios. We’ll have a huge table set up in the back room which has fantastic natural light, a lovely garden view and easy access to the kitchen for teas, coffees etc.

Can I park nearby?: Yes, there is parking through Ringo outside, be sure to park in the correct area, between 3 First Cross Road and Hampton Road, the rest of the road is residents parking only.

Can I put the lunch I am bringing in the fridge?: Yes!

I’m very much a beginner, is that ok?: Yes that’s absolutely fine. The workshop will give you more fun ways to approach working with charcoal, with more varied and interesting results, and introduce you to drawing tools you may not be aware of.

Enrolment deadline: To be sure of a place please book early, but if there is availability you can book up to 2 days prior to the start date. This allows me to ensure I have the materials and set up for everyone. Any closer than that, please message me to check.

Refund policy: The workshop is exchangeable up until 28 days prior to the workshop date if another is available, or can be refunded with a £25 admin fee if you need to cancel. After this date your booking is non-refundable and non-exchangeable. This enables the workshop to go ahead for others.

What if the course is cancelled by me?: A workshop with fewer than 5 participants may be cancelled. You will be notified by email if this happens, unless you would like us to text you instead, but please let us know. A refund would then be made which might take a few days to come through.
