Machapuchare in the Annapurna region of the Himalayas. This was a commissioned piece for a private client who has extensively travelled in Nepal both for her work and for her love of the mountains. Charcoal on paper, 84 x 54cm.

How do you approach a drawing? There’s often so much design involved, conscious or subconscious, even with a source photo to hand. How the eye travels through an image, and where it rests - you need to lead it, it needs to feel comfortable, calm, not dstracted. I’ve expressed the distance by softening the edges, detail and tonal balance in the background, and using freer sharper mark making in the foreground, completely softened towards the edge of the paper to bring the focus back inside the frame. Your eye naturally rests on the peak, I used the golden ratio (1:1.618) to ensure this focal point of the composition is where I want it to be.
