A huge commissioned oil painting on linen for a client in Switzerland. Grand Combin and Petit Combin (Val de Bagnes) viewed from Mont Fort, Verbier. Final (cropped) sizer 1.8 × 1.4m. To be rolled in the tube for shipping.

There's so much memory stored in a glacier, so much information about past climate and environment. These are retreating with climate change like all the others. It's hard to imagine this as a moving landscape, the contrast of snow and ice against the static rock beneath.. It's a lovely subject to paint. There’s a hut in the landscape too. I’ve made it very subtle to avoid distracting the eye from the central focus . In this image at least, nature dominates.

Details are so important. I've created a softness to the edges of the shadows in this which doesn't really exist in reality. I prefer the contrast it creates to the sharp definition of the rock and the associated implications of materiality that decision imbues. It adds a calmness too that I love.
